ABOUT BACHELOR STUDIES

Pragmatics and Management of Culture is an innovative education programme. The course combines fundamental cultural studies with development of leadership and practical skills of efficient governance in the field of culture. The programme graduates are culture experts and highly qualified managers enjoying vast knowledge in history and theory of culture and capable of independent thought and creative work.

Our graduates will attain the following set of skills:

  • museum mangement and art business fundamentals

  • project management,

  • innovative management fundamentals,

  • modern  methods of culture analysis,

  • art work analysis skills,

  • urban development fundamentals,

  • technologies of creating projects, products and services in the field of fine arts, literature, theatre, music and other kinds of arts.

The programme offers fundamental training in art studies. Art studies courses make up a research framework for graduates that plan to commit themselves to art studies, museum management or art business.

MANAGEMENT OF CULTURE UNIT

Exhibition Project Management 

Introduction to exhibition management / gallery business. Specific features of the cultural policy and art market in Russia and other countries. Specific features of cultural work management – storage, expert examination, insurance, logistics. Current situation in art business, key players in the field of art. Both Russian and international professional community communications system.

 

Urban Studies

Urban development history. Creative industry and creative project impact on shaping the urban environment, city images and people’s way of life. Foundations of statutory regulation of urban development and cultural heritage conservation. Environmental aspect of urban development.

Basic Definitions of Art Business 

Tactics, strategy and logistics issues of art project management. Modern management methods and their specific features for the art industry. Methods of strategic, tactic and operating decision-making in art industry. Typology and organizational structure of different cultural institutions:  galleries, museums, exhibition halls, cultural funds, auction houses etc.

Innovative Management

Development and deployment of innovations in the field of culture. Innovative project funding. Methods of project cost-efficiency assessment. Marketing tools designed to promote innovative products.

TEACHERS of this unit are professors and lecturers of MSU faculties of philosophy, linguistics, psychology, history, state administration, foreign languages and regional studies; they are leading researchers of the Institute for Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the State Institute for Art Studies, Oriental Studies Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Psychology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, MSU World Culture Institute.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING

With on-the-job training included in the programme, students acquire management skills in the field of culture. We cooperate with Moscow Department of Culture, and, in particular, with the Moscow Multi-Functional Center for Young Adults. Work in the MMFC Young Muscovite School is a great practical path to understanding key urban needs. A unique opportunity to offer your own projects under the supervision of experienced administrators can be used as a steppingstone to be enrolled in the candidates pool of Moscow Government and to start civil service for the Russian Federation.

Bachelor studies programme training can be attended on the contract basis. Upon the graduation, students are assigned the “culture expert” qualification. Education programme graduates have diplomas of the Moscow State University.
